Kinesio taping began to unveil itself around 2008 when the general public noticed Olympic and professional athletes wearing colored strips of tape on their bodies. At first thought to be markings of some type of tattoo or marketing message, the public soon learned that these pieces of tape were thoughtfully placed in a certain pattern on the athlete’s body as part of their muscle treatment and to aid performance.
“Most that I’ve applied kinesio taping notice a change in the treated area within 24 hours.”

How Kinesio Taping Works
Traditionally, muscle injuries were dealt with by confining or limiting movement of the injured muscles. In some instances, tape was applied to injuries in a wrapping method meant to immobilize the injured muscle; however, this would also slow circulation and the body’s healing process. Medical science has now shown that moving muscles improves circulation which accelerates healing and can reduce pain. This science is the basis of the Kinesio Taping Method. Fundamentally, the application of Kinesio Tape lifts the skin and tissues that cover a muscle allowing better circulation around the muscle; yet it is applied in a way to also stabilize.
Properties of K-Tape
- Mimics the properties of epidermis of the skin
- The degree of stretch of the K-tape affects the elastic qualities of human skin
Benefits of Kinesio Taping
Kinesio Taping Method was created by Dr. Kenzo Kase who lists these four drivers behind the intent of the tape and the taping method.
- Supporting the muscle by improving muscle’s ability to contract and protecting the muscle from cramping over extension and over contraction
- Improvement of blood flow and lymphatic circulation reducing swelling
- Relieving pain
- Improving range of motion
At N-Balance Physical Therapy, the therapists have been trained in clinical therapeutic application of the Kinesio Taping Method.
