“The majority of patients diagnosed with “tennis elbow” don’t play tennis.”
Causes of Elbow Pain
Elbow pain can be caused by a variety of problems and a common cause in adults is called tendonitis, either on the inside of the elbow or the outside of the elbow. Pain on the outside of the elbow (on the side of the thumb) is sometimes called tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and pain on the inside of the elbow (on the side of the pinky finger) is sometimes called golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis).
Other more serious problem that can cause elbow pain is ulnar nerve entrapment. This occurs when the ulnar nerve in the arm becomes compressed or irritated causing pain in the inside of the elbow; sometimes causing tingling and numbness down to the ring and pinky finger.
Children that have been pulled up by their arm stretching apart the bones at the elbow can cause an elbow subluxation or partial dislocation. When this occurs the ligaments that support the elbow can become trapped when the elbow snaps back together and is referred to as “nursemaid’s elbow”.
