Ankle pain can be caused by injury or disease of the ankle joint. The ankle is made up of bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles that are designed to support your body weight. Ankle pain can be acute (resent injury) or chronic (continued pain from an old injury). Regardless if your ankle pain is acute or chronic it will affect your ability to walk, making mobility limited.

“When walking in high heels, there is a large increase in bone-on-bone forces in the knee joint, possibly explaining higher incidences of osteoarthritis in women.”
Journal of Applied Biomechanics

Causes of Ankle & Foot Pain

Ankle sprains are the most common ankle injury. This happens with the ligaments of the ankle become partially or completely torn as a result of a sudden stretching or twisting of the ankle. Pain is initially severe and can be associated with a “popping” sound or sensation and there is usually immediate swelling over the area of injury. Sometimes an ankle sprain can be so severe that there will also be a bone fracture, or avulsion fracture.

Ankle pain can also be caused by tendonitis which is due to inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the posterior tibial tendon or the peroneal tendon. This is usually the result of trauma during sports activities or overuse injuries.  Tendonitis can also be caused by underlying inflammatory diseased such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Foot pain is most commonly related to plantar fasciitis which involves pain and inflammation of the thick fascia on the bottom of your feet. Plantar fasciitis usually causes a stabbing pain that occurs in the morning with your first steps or after sitting for a prolonged period of time. Other sources of foot pain can come from plantar warts which are noncancerous skin growths on the soles of your feet. They often develop below pressure points in your feet and cause pain with walking.
